Back in Kampung Bugis

After 10 long weeks in Sumbawa teaching, I’m back in Kampung Bugis, Singaraja, Bali for a two-week vacation. On my first morning here, I instantly recognized a few of the things that I have been missing over the last 10 weeks: driving my middle daughter to school, being out in the morning traffic, smelling food cooking for breakfasts, people coming and going to the market, the gentle swell of the early morning waves as they wash against the shore. Lovely to be here.

And starting today some of my favorite quotes about work. I’m not sure where I found these, but they reflect my feelings these days as I keep thinking about retirement.

“One of the saddest things is that the only thing that a man can do for eight hours a day, day after day, is work. You can’t eat eight hours a day nor drink for eight hours a day nor make love for eight hours—all you can do for eight hours is work. Which is the reason why man makes himself and everybody else so miserable and unhappy.”
—William Faulkner, interview in Writers at Work, 1958
