It’s Raining in the Tropics

It’s raining. It’s been raining for most of the past 24 hours. It keeps some of us inside our comfortable houses or hotel rooms; we have another bottle of wine or a few more beers and hope that tomorrow we’ll be able to get on with our lives as tourists or expats. The rain is an inconvenience, but it’s a little romantic, this tropical rain.

But, sections of the country are underwater. My home in Bali is wet, and the rain has made a mess of the house, but we have the money to fix the problems. What about those people that are underwater and don’t have the money, resources or connections to get to someplace that is warm and dry? I’ve written three posts for today looking for a topic that was light and funny and that would appeal to those folks that read this blog and want to move to Indonesia, but my thoughts keep coming back to the rain and the images that have flooded my consciousness of people swimming in their houses; the folks that have no options, no other place to go, no reserves and no hope for the government or the wealthy who live off their labor to bail them out.

Inshallah the rain will stop tomorrow.
